Financial advisors and the duties they perform

Financial advisors can provide a variety of services for clients. They are able to cover a wide range of financial needs and build a financial plan to help you achieve your financial goals.

Do you know of someone who works with a financial advisor? If you do, you may have wondered about what it is that a financial advisor actually does.

The primary role of a financial advisor is to assess your financial needs, discuss your personal goals, and provide professional advice. An advisor can help you with critical financial concerns that may include tax planning, insurance needs, retirement and estate planning.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the typical duties of a financial advisor can include:1

  • Helping clients plan for specific circumstances, such as education expenses, retirement and estate planning
  • Monitoring a clients' accounts and determine if changes are needed to improve account performance or to accommodate life changes, such as getting married or having children
  • Researching investment opportunities

In addition, many financial advisors are fully licensed to sell a variety of insurance products such as long-term care insurance, disability and life insurance. Because of this broad range of capabilities, a financial advisor provides a valuable service when it comes to strategically managing your total financial picture.
