  • The Insurance Claims Process

    Protective Life believes that caring for beneficiaries is at the heart of our purpose as a company. We try to make this process as simple as possible for you with these four steps:

    Step 1: Notification

    First, let us know of the loss of your loved one by completing and submitting a notification of death or by calling us at 1-800-424-1592.

    You will need: Your name and contact information; Deceased’s name, policy number or social security number, birth date, death date, cause of death, manner of death, and country of death. Additionally, beneficiary information and funeral home information would be helpful, but is not required at this time.

    Step 2: Filing a Claim

    The claim packet will ask for basic information regarding your claim. You can obtain this packet by email, fax or US Postal when you notify us of the passing of your loved one by phone or online. Once you have the packet, please complete all information and make sure to include any requested documents to complete your claim.

    You will need: A certified copy of the death certificate, any other requested beneficiary identification documents (trust document, corporate charter, etc.)

    Step 3: Receiving Your Funds

    Once your claim is approved, your benefit payment will be sent out within one business day.

    In the claim packet, you may be given a choice of how you want to receive your benefit payment. If your benefit amount is $10,000 or higher you may be eligible to receive an Immediate Benefit Account. The Immediate Benefit Account offers the convenience of an interest-bearing draft account – similar to a checking account – for your funds instead of a one-time, lump-sum check. You can receive a personal checkbook and write checks to third parties, including individuals, stores, creditors, banks, brokerage firms and other financial institutions. You can also write a check to withdraw your entire balance and close your account at any time.

    Step 4: Financial Counseling*

    After you receive your benefit payment, we recommend contacting your financial planner or Protective to discuss options regarding how to manage your proceeds.
